Every Diploma theory unit is written answers. 360 original 20-mark questions across D1–D5, each with a full mark scheme — write your answer and the AI examiner marks it part by part, point by point. Then sit a unit mock paper against the clock.
Try a Diploma question free →Diploma mark schemes reward the chain, not the list: a bare fact earns a mark, the same fact linked to its effect on the wine earns two. That's a writing skill — and writing skills need reps, not re-reads.
The vine and its growth cycle, climate and site, hazards, grape-growing options, canopy and harvest, must, fermentation, maturation and faults — the how and why behind every choice.
Supply, demand and the price of wine, costs from vineyard to shelf, routes to market and wine marketing — answered with the commercial reality examiners want.
16 sections from Bordeaux to China, weighted the way the unit is: France and Italy heaviest, then Spain and Portugal, the New World, Germany and Austria — plus cross-regional and grape-variety essays.
Methods, Champagne in depth, and the other traditional- and tank-method wines — with the labelling and sweetness terms that decide the factual question.
Fortification and maturation choices, Sherry and the solera, Port from the Douro vineyard to the bottle, Madeira, Vins Doux Naturels and Rutherglen Muscat.
Each theory unit is a closed-book paper of open-response questions. The table shows what the real exam looks like and how our unit mock papers recreate it. Every question here is worth 20 marks; parts are weighted the way the paper states them, so a part marked (60%) is worth 12.
| Unit | Real exam (theory) | Our questions | Our mock paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| D1 Wine Production | One 90-minute paper, usually 3–5 questions · 20% of the Diploma | 80 | 4 questions · 90 min, from different sections |
| D2 Wine Business | One 60-minute paper of short-answer questions, usually 3–5 · 10% | 40 | 4 questions · 60 min, one per section |
| D3 Wines of the World | Two papers on one day — 2 hours and 80 minutes — around 7 essay questions · 50% | 200 | Paper 1: 4 questions · 120 min → break → Paper 2: 3 questions · 80 min, spread across France, Italy, Spain/Portugal, the New World and a cross-regional question |
| D4 Sparkling Wines | Theory plus a blind tasting of three wines in one 90-minute sitting · 5% | 20 | 3 theory questions* |
| D5 Fortified Wines | Theory plus a blind tasting of three wines in one 90-minute sitting · 5% | 20 | 3 theory questions*, always including Sherry and Port |
* Our D4 and D5 papers give the three theory questions 90 minutes; in the real sitting the blind tasting shares that time. D6, the independent research assignment, is coursework rather than an exam and isn't covered.
Behind every question sits a point-based mark scheme, split per part. A bare fact earns one mark; the same fact linked to its cause or its effect on the vine, the grapes or the wine earns the next; a fully developed point with a specific example earns another. Generic statements ("temperature control is used") earn nothing, and nor does accurate content that doesn't answer the question asked.
In the trainer you write each part in its own box. The AI examiner marks it against the mark scheme, ticks every point you earned and shows the ones you missed, with a line of feedback on what to add next time. After the last part you get the question score out of 20 with a Pass (55%), Merit (65%) or Distinction (75%) band, the full model answer, and an examiner's note on the pitfalls that cost candidates marks on that question.
